MMC Norilsk Nickel, a global nickel and palladium major, and BASF, a leader in the chemical industry, have made a joint statement regarding continuing their relationship based on the mutual exchange of ideas as well as information regarding market opportunities.
As leaders in their respective industries, their joint purpose is to create innovative technologies that add value to customers while utilizing best practices that help to safeguard the environment.
Harald Schwager, BASF SE Board Member, and Andrei Bougrov, Deputy Chairman of the Board/Senior Vice President at MMC Norilsk Nickel reaffirmed the ongoing cooperation between Norilsk and BASF. Spanning several years, this joint cooperative effort highlights how collective technology leadership enables customers to benefit from innovative solutions for mobile emissions and chemical catalyst solutions.
"Our continuing cooperation with BASF, a major consumer of PGMs (Platinum Group Metals) is an important focus for Norilsk Nickel," said Andrei Bougrov. ”BASF Catalysts is an important customer of our platinum and palladium products,” adds Bougrov. PGMs are essential for the production of BASF’s Catalyst solutions. In fact, a majority of BASF Catalysts’ PGM consumption is used for the production of mobile emissions catalysts for a wide range of market applications that protect the air we breathe, and to a lesser extent in various chemical catalysts products.
Dedicated to sustainable practices, a major milestone for Norilsk Nickel has been its closure of its nickel plant, situated in Norilsk. With plans to reduce polluting emissions overall from its operating sites, the precious metals supplier is also moving forward with the next phase of its strategic implementation of the Sulfur Project at Nadezhda Metallurgical plant. The focus is to drastically reduce sulfur dioxide emissions in its Polar Division. The organization will continue to monitor the changes that are taking place at these production units
Over the past two years, demonstrable improvements have been made to Norilsk Nickel’s operations and are still in progress. These initiatives are examples of its continuing strategic modernization program that the organization will be executing well into 2025. Moreover, an important goal of this program is to improve environmental well-being within the region. “As a linchpin of our long-term strategy, we are encouraged with our ongoing efforts in implementing sustainable practices,” adds Bougrov.
Against today’s backdrop of tighter environmental standards, this cooperation brings a new level of innovation to benefit BASF’s mobile emissions and chemical catalysts customers. “At BASF, we collaborate closely with innovative suppliers, such as Norilsk Nickel, that apply fundamental and widely-accepted standards of environmental protection and occupational safety as well as bring significant value to our customers,” said Harold Schwager.
The partnership between Norilsk Nickel and BASF will continue to place greater emphasis on close collaboration that will continuously improve the relationship based on the mutual exchange of ideas as well as information regarding market opportunities.
